The Department of Social Policy and Intervention at the University of Oxford is a multidisciplinary center of excellence for research and teaching in social policy, the development and systematic evaluation of social interventions, and population studies. In the recent UK National research assessment, REF 2014, the Department ranked first in the UK, across all disciplines and universities, on research quality and impact. It carries out both applied and basic research and is home to a global community of academics and researchers with a range of disciplinary backgrounds. The department’s research falls under three main clusters: the Oxford Institute of Social Policy (OISP), the Centre for Evidence-Based Social Intervention (CEBI), and the Oxford Centre for Population Research (OXPOP). The Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention (CEBI) is a global leader in conducting rigorous evaluations of interventions aimed at tackling today’s urgent social problems. CEBI investigates what works, with whom, and in which contexts, particularly through high-quality randomized trials and factorial experiments, systematic reviews and other evaluation designs. Researchers at CEBI also carry out basic research into the causes of social problems, to understand better how and why interventions are effective. Finally, CEBI’s ultimate aim is to help develop successful interventions that translate into effective social policies and program.
